Hey Lykkers! If we’re looking for a place where castles meet lakes, where history hugs nature, and where every corner looks like a postcard, then Sirmione is the perfect getaway.
Sitting on a narrow peninsula on the southern edge of Lake Garda, this Italian town offers medieval charm, sparkling waters, and timeless views—all within reach.
We’ve got two great options:
By Car:
From Milan, it takes about 1.5 hours (90 miles) via the A4 highway. Parking near the old town (like at Parcheggio Monte Baldo) costs around $2–3 per hour, or $20 per day. Just remember: the historic center is a limited traffic zone, so we need to park outside.
By Train + Bus:
- Take a train from Milano Centrale to Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione. Tickets cost about $10–12, and the trip lasts around an hour.
- From Desenzano station, hop on the LN026 bus (around $2), then transfer or walk to the entrance of Sirmione.
This iconic fortress welcomes us at the town’s entrance. Castello Scaligero was built in the 13th century and is surrounded by water on three sides. Inside, we can walk along stone walls, climb towers, and take in unbeatable lake views.
Opening Hours:
- April–September: 8:30 AM – 7:30 PM
- October–March: 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM
- Closed Mondays in off-season
Ticket Prices:
- Adults: $7
- Children (under 18): Free
- Young adults (18–25) with valid ID: $2.20
- Combo ticket with the Roman ruins: $13
At the peninsula’s tip, we’ll find Grotte di Catullo, the remains of a huge Roman villa from the 1st century. It’s surrounded by olive trees, birdsongs, and lake views that stretch forever.
Hours:
- April–September: 8:30 AM – 7:30 PM
- October–March: until 5:00 PM, closed Mondays
Admission:
- Adults: $8.50
- Children under 18: Free
Inside, there's also a small museum with mosaics, pottery, and Roman artifacts. The best part? Climbing the ruins at sunset—it’s unforgettable.
- Jamaica Beach: This flat rocky beach is just a 10-minute walk from the Roman ruins. It’s free and perfect for sunbathing or dipping into clear, shallow waters.
- Lakeside Promenade: Ideal for a scenic walk. Early morning or late evening are the quietest times.
- Aquaria Thermal Spa: Want to soak in hot mineral-rich pools while looking at the lake? A 2-hour session costs around $40, with longer stays available too.
We suggest visiting between May and September. July and August have the best weather but also the most tourists. If we prefer quiet streets and less heat, late May, June, or early September is ideal. Most attractions open from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, with last entry around 5:30 PM.
- Accommodation: Budget hotels start at around $80 per night, while lakeside boutique stays can range from $150–250. Booking in advance is smart, especially for summer.
- Local food: Try fresh pasta, grilled lake fish, and lemon gelato. Expect a casual meal for two to cost $30–50, depending on the restaurant.
- Arrive Early: Tour groups flood the town after 10 AM—getting here before that makes a huge difference.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: Cobblestone streets can be slippery, especially near the lake.
- Bring a Hat & Sunscreen: The sun can be strong, especially during lakeside walks.
- Bring Cash for Small Shops or Buses: Many places accept cards, but some local vendors still prefer cash.
- Check for Events: Sirmione hosts music nights, open-air performances, and local markets—ask at the tourist info point when you arrive.
So Lykkers, if we want a trip filled with breathtaking lake views, rich history, an impressive medieval castle, and the warm charm of an Italian town—all easy to explore on foot—Sirmione is the place to be. Spending just a day here or extending our stay to a weekend getaway will leave us feeling refreshed and inspired.
